HANOI, April 6, 2026 – At the morning session of the 1st session of the 16th National Assembly of Vietnam held on April 6 local time, Trần Thanh Mẫn was officially elected as the Chairman of the National Assembly through legal procedures and voting.
Born in August 1962, Trần Thanh Mẫn possesses profound political literacy and extensive governance experience. Throughout his long political career, he has always been active in important leading positions of the Party and State of Vietnam. He once served as the Deputy Chairman and then Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, playing a pivotal role in coordinating social affairs, promoting national unity, and advancing democratic construction. This has laid a solid foundation of work and popular support.
Since April 2021, Trần Thanh Mẫn has served as the Permanent Vice Chairman of the National Assembly, fully assisting the Chairman in his duties and deeply participating in the country's legislative supervision and decision-making on major affairs. On May 2, 2024, he was entrusted with the responsibility of chairing the daily work of the National Assembly. Faced with complex agendas and arduous tasks, he promoted the smooth progress of all National Assembly affairs with his steady and pragmatic work style and excellent coordination and management capabilities, ensuring the smooth operation of legislative and supervisory functions.
Thanks to his outstanding performance and remarkable contributions during his tenure, Trần Thanh Mẫn was elected Chairman of the National Assembly at the 7th session of the 15th National Assembly on May 20, 2024. His successful re-election to the chairmanship at the 1st session of the 16th National Assembly fully demonstrates the high recognition and extensive trust of all deputies in his past work. It also marks that the National Assembly of Vietnam will, under his leadership, continue to strive for promoting the country's rule of law construction, improving people's livelihoods, and realizing its strategic goals.
